During the Eastern Zhou dynasty (770–256 BCE), China entered a time of political division but intellectual brilliance. Rival states competed for power, and in this climate, thinkers and teachers debated how society should be governed, how people should live, and how order could be restored. Later generations called this period the “Hundred Schools of Thought.”

Among the most famous was Confucianism, founded by Confucius, which stressed morality, respect for elders, and the importance of education. Daoism, inspired by Laozi, emphasized harmony with nature, simplicity, and the idea of “wu wei”—non-action or effortless action. Mohism, led by Mozi, promoted universal love and equality, opposing war and extravagance. Legalism, in contrast, argued that strict laws and harsh punishments were the only way to keep society stable.

Other schools also flourished. Military strategists like Sunzi wrote The Art of War, a timeless guide to strategy. Physicians developed medical theories, while agriculturalists studied farming techniques. Writers and storytellers collected folktales, while miscellaneous schools explored astronomy, mechanics, and natural sciences. This explosion of knowledge turned the Eastern Zhou into one of the most creative eras in Chinese history.

Though the states eventually fell into conflict, the ideas born in this period shaped China for millennia. Confucian ethics influenced family and government. Daoist philosophy inspired art and spirituality. Legalist methods built the first centralized empire. The Hundred Schools were more than competing voices—they were the roots of Chinese civilization’s intellectual tradition, a legacy that continues to inspire the world today.
